Do I need a valid photo ID to vote?
Yes. Voters will be required to show photo ID for elections held in 2026. Conveniently, NC State’s WolfPack OneCard counts as valid photo ID. For more information about other valid photo ID options, visit the North Carolina State Board of Elections Voter ID page.
How old do you have to be to vote?
In North Carolina, you must be 18 years old to vote in the General Election. If you are 17 years old, and will be 18 by Election Day, you may participate in Primary Elections. You may pre-register to vote at age 16 in North Carolina, but will need to wait until you meet the voting age criteria above before you cast a ballot.
What is Absentee voting? Is it the same as Vote-by-Mail?
In North Carolina, absentee voting includes Early Voting, voting by mail, and voting from another state or abroad to your registered county. All registered voters are qualified to vote absentee if they choose. Voters are responsible for following all guidelines and policies for absentee voting set out by their registered State Board of Elections. Learn more about absentee voting on the North Carolina State Board of Elections Vote By Mail page.
Can I return my absentee ballot to an Early Voting site?
Yes. You must stand in line with the rest of the voters until you get inside. Once you are inside you must go to the registration/check-in table. You will hand your voted absentee ballot, sealed in the return envelope, to the elections official and will be required to fill out an absentee ballot return log. Once logged, you will exit through the same exit as the other voters exiting. This is the safest way for both voters and election officials. If hand-delivering, it must be logged in when delivered. Drop-boxes are not permitted under North Carolina Law. Learn more information on the North Carolina State Board of Elections Vote By Mail page.
I am worried about my absentee ballot not being counted. What can I do?
Numerous safeguards are included in the absentee voting process. Review the North Carolina State Board of Elections 12 Reasons Absentee Voting is Secure page to learn more. If you are registered in North Carolina, the State Board of Elections launched a virtual portal for tracking your absentee ballot for the March 5 election.
Which method should I use to vote: On election day, during early voting, or absentee?
As long as you are voting, we are ecstatic! However, Pack the Polls recognizes that college students and young voters often face challenges when it comes to voting. Because of this, many students utilize early voting. This period allows you to easily fix any problems with your registration.
